Dear Friend,
|
God's Word is
being made available to more people every day. Believers throughout the
world are taking responsibility to give God's Word to the people around
them - through Scripture translation, evangelism, social action and
much more. Let's be encouraged by their work and challenged by their
example.
"Go to the people of all
nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father,
the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have
told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.'
Matthew 28:19-20

The Challenge of Papua New Guinea
|
|
With more than 800 languages spoken
in some of the remotest communities in the world, Papua New Guinea
presents unique challenges when it comes to Scripture translation. But by encouraging
local church groups to instigate and run translation projects, the
Bible Society has ensured that its translation program flourishes. The
Bible Society is providing a variety of support ranging from
equipment and training to
appointing a Translation Officer.
In the near future, the
Society is looking forward to the publication of the Kiriwina Bible,
the first full Bible to be published in Papua New Guinea for several
years. And more are due to follow. The Society itself is currently
supporting 12 projects, while partner agencies are supporting several
more. The primary outcome, it says, will be "the provision of
thousands of vernacular Bibles." Please pray for these projects that will enable many people
to read the Bible in their own language for the first time. Pray that people will be
receptive to God's Word. Pray
especially that Scripture will provide a foundation for young
people's lives.

Danish Transition
|
The Rev Tine Lindhardt
(Pictured) is to leave the Danish Bible Society. After more than
seven years as General Secretary, she is returning to parish
ministry in the city of Odense from 1 September. She has shown skilful
leadership and led a number of significant projects, not least the
translation of the New Testament into modern Danish.
Please pray for the Danish Bible
Society in this period of transition to new leadership. Give thanks for
the work that Tine has been part of and pray especially for Tage
Kleinbeck, the Society's Deputy General Secretary and Head of
Fundraising, who has been appointed interim General Secretary. Pray that the initiatives that
the Danish Bible Society carry out at home will continue and that the
support they provide to the international Bible Society programme will
remain strong. Pray
also that the right person will be found to lead the work forward.

Welsh Braille
|
Speaking at the
launch of the Welsh New Testament and Psalms in Braille in June, Dr
Watcyn James, BFBS's Welsh Development Officer, said, "Of all the
languages of the world, only 40 or so have the Bible available in
Braille. Now blind Welsh-speaking people can read the Word of God in
their heart language."
Putting the Welsh Bible into Braille was Ms Evans'
idea(pictured with Braille NT & Psalms). "My dream has come
true. The Bible should be available for all to read. I'm very grateful
indeed to everyone who supported this appeal."
In all £25,000 had to be raised to develop the Bible and
to pay for printing, which was coordinated by the Royal National
Institute for the Blind. The whole project was completed in just six
months. Give
thanks that some £15,000 was raised in less than four
months, enabling the work to go ahead quickly.
Pray for the plans to make
the first 10 sets of the New Testament and Psalms in Welsh in Braille
available at main libraries. Pray
that access to Scripture in this format will bring many Welsh people
closer to God. Pray
for the ongoing work to create Braille Scripture in more languages.
