Dear Friend,
|
|
We are inspired
time and again by colleagues around the world who rise to incredible
challenges to make the Gospel known and bring help to the people around
them. Whether taking the chace to distribute Scripture at a
sporting event or helping people rebuild their lives
after disaster, Bible Societies rarely miss an opportunity to
make God known. This is a challenge to us - how much would we do
for the Gospel? Just how far would we go to make God known to the
people around us?
Now,
brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which
you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you
are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise,
you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of
first importance that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures. 1 Cor 15:1-3 NIV

World Cup Opportunities
|
|
With the start of football's 2010 FIFA World Cup in
South Africa rapidly approaching, the Bible Society of South Africa is
among agencies working to ensure that God's Word is present among the excitements
and disappointments facing supporters and players. The Bible Society
has donated 20,000 copies of the NIV and is also supplying Bibles
in various languages to Churches and missionary organisations involved
in further Scripture distribution relating to the World Cup.
The Society is
keen to do more if funds allow. "Please pray that more funds will
become available for further free distribution," says Mr
Geldenhuys from the Bible Society. Pray for this opportunity to share
the gospel with people from all over the world as they visit the World
Cup.

Volunteers Make a Difference in Chile
|
Our colleagues in Chile are still facing difficult times
following the earthquake and tsunami earlier this year. This
statement was recently circulated by them: "We want to give thanks to God for the hundreds of
volunteers who helped us to collect money from donors in Santiago on
the morning of May 11. The money that they raised will help the Bible
Society to maintain and develop social and Christian projects giving
spiritual and material support to homes for children affected by HIV
and AIDS and support in the form of Bibles to schools and churches
destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami that occurred at the end of
February."
Please
continue to pray for the ongoing efforts in Chile to
bring practical and spiritual help to people who lost family, homes, livelihood and
belongings in the earthquake. Photo shows the team preparing Bibles and
aid to bring to the badly damaged Robinson Crusoe Island.

Serious Unrest in Thailand
|
The United Bible Societies fellowship is asked to pray
for the people of Thailand at this time of serious civil unrest.
Thailand Bible Society General Secretary the Rev Dr Seree Lorgunpai
(pictured) writes:
"The chaos
continues to worsen. Our own people are killing each other and
destroying their own land. We have had to close the office in Bangkok,
and today (May 19) the Chiang Mai office also had to close because
demonstrators had set fire to the nearby government office. Please pray for our people and ask that God will open more
doors for us to spread the Gospel. In this kind of situation,
we need to find a way to spread the Word quickly through electronic
media."
Please pray for the Bible Society
staff as they seek ways to continue ministering without the use of
their offices. Pray
that the Bible Society buildings will not be damaged and
that staff will soon be safe to return. Continue to pray for a
resloution to the situation that is costing lives and causing
destruction.

Please remember John as he is currently
in Budapest at a United Bible Society conference for fundraisers. Do pray that this
will be a time of encouragment and blessing that will further the work
of Bible Societies around the world. Pray too for John and all
those attending the conference as they travel home on Wednesday.
Margaret Bohoussou has been home for
the month of May, and it was so good to be able to spend a
little time with her. She will
be flying back to the Ivory Coast on Sunday 30th May,
so please pray that her flights will leave as scheduled and the
current flight restrictions will have no impact on her
planned departure.
Pray for John who will be speaking
at...
Trintiy Presbyterian Church, Boardmills on Sunday 30 May at
11.30am
First
