Day of Prayer Image 2010

The Bible Society in Northern Ireland
Prayer Circle

Dear Friend,

Sometimes we need to be reminded that no matter what circumstances or surroundings we find ourselves in - God is still majestic. He is majestic in all the earth. We are reminded of this time and time again, as God opens doors in countries where we expect opposition and paves the way for His Word where we expect there to be walls. Join us in this special week of prayer, giving praise to our Lord God.

"O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!" Psalm 8:1 (NIV)

Bible Societies observe May 9 each year as their special Day of Prayer, and everyone is invited to join in praying for Bible work in their own country and around the world. The prayer below is offered as a guide for your prayers throughout the week.

Prayer from United Bible Societies

Lord of our past, we thank you for those who, in obedience to your call, have founded and built the Bible Societies around the world and brought them together into one worldwide Fellowship.

Lord of our present, we thank you for the unifying, healing and restoring effect of the Scriptures, drawing together Christians of every tradition in the single task of making the message of the Bible available, accessible, understood and applied.

Lord of our future, we thank you for the sure and certain hope that, whether we work in barren or fruitful circumstances, our labour is not in vain since you have promised that your Word will not fall short of what you plan for it but will do everything you send it to do.

May we take strength from your blessing and protection in the past days. May we work together to maintain the unity of the Spirit with one heart and mind in the present days. And may we renew our vision to strive for a future day when all nations live under the blessing and direction of your Word.

In the name of the Father who sustains us, the Son who heals us and the Spirit who inspires us.   Amen

New Testament on Kurdish TV Channel!

Tamar, GSec TurkeyWhen the Turkish Bible Society (TBS) began translating the first book of the New Testament into Kurdish, they had so many security concerns that they were keeping their work rather quiet. So when a producer from a Kurdish TV Channel directed by the Turkish government itself, contacted the General Secretary of TBS (pictured) and asked for a copy of the Kurdish NT to promote on TV, it was quite amazing! The result was a broadcast lasting 1 minute 10 seconds which was shown 3 times, giving information about the translation and TBS, and stating that the full Bible will soon be ready as the translation work on the OT is going well. This was incredible advertising - promoting God's Word on Kurdish TV! Praise God for creating this incredible opportunity and pray that it will prompt Kurdish speakers to seek out a copy of the NT for themselves.

Encouragement from Malawi

Clapperton GSec MalawiGive thanks for our ability to communicate across the miles with Bible Society colleagues. A conversation with Clapperton Mayuni General Secretary of the Bible Society in Malawi (pictured) was an opportunity to encourage and inform each other about Bible translation and other projects that are being undertaken there. BSNI, with funds from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, has recently designated $22,000 to the translation of the Chichewa Study Bible there and it is planned to complete the New Testament with full study notes by the end of 2010. Pray that plans being made for the printing of this important publication (in either China or Korea) will not be delayed by the current severe pressure on budgets in Malawi.

This Capture Competition is running until 21st May. It gives young people in Kay Stage 3 (12 - 15 yrs) R.E. classes the opportunity to express their understanding of what they are being taught in the form of a photograph which they can enter from their mobile phone or digital camera.
